How much does EV charger installation cost?

The price of a home EV charger is mostly about the run and your panel — not the charger. Here's what a done-right, permitted Level 2 install really costs in our area.

We're Astral — a licensed C-10 electrical contractor (CSLB #1114918). Honest ranges, permit included, your exact number from a free assessment.

Typical cost in our area

Most home EV charger installs in our area land around $1,500–$3,000, permitted, on a dedicated circuit.

What you're gettingTypical range
Simple install — charger near the panel, capacity available$1,200 – $2,000
Typical install — dedicated 60A circuit, medium run$1,500 – $3,000
Long run / conduit / detached garage / trenching$3,000 – $6,000
Panel too tight → 200A upgrade firstsee the panel-upgrade guideadd $6,500 – $9,500

These are typical ranges for our service area, not a quote. Every home is different — the real number comes from a free on-site assessment and a NEC load calculation by a licensed C-10. We never promise a price online we can't stand behind.

A charger bolted on without a load calc is how you get nuisance trips or an unsafe circuit. We size the circuit for real, permit it, and if your panel is tight we show you exactly why — no surprise upsell mid-job.

What moves the price

Distance from the panel to the charger (the wire run)
Whether it runs through finished walls, conduit, or a detached garage
Your panel's free capacity (a load calc tells us)
Charger type (Tesla Universal Wall Connector, J1772/NACS)
Permit + inspection in your city

What a done-right price includes

The cheapest number online usually leaves this out. Ours doesn't.

  • A dedicated 60A circuit sized to NEC 625 (48A × 125% continuous)
  • Load calc to confirm your panel can carry it
  • Tesla-certified install — Universal Wall Connector or any J1772/NACS
  • Permit + inspection
  • 1-year workmanship warranty

Plus your home's Electrical Score — it comes with your installation.

A licensed C-10 grades your panel, service and wiring 0–100 and registers it in our system with a shareable certificate — proof of a safe, to-code home for buyers, insurers and your own records. Your Score is created with your project; you can also get it on its own if you just want to know where you stand before you buy.

Questions, answered straight

Does the charger price include the unit?+

The ranges above are for installation. If you want us to supply the charger (e.g., a Tesla Universal Wall Connector), we add it at cost + install — or you provide your own. Either way it's a Tesla-certified, permitted install.

Why did another quote come in at $400?+

A $400 'install' is usually a charger plugged into an existing outlet or a short surface run with no permit or load calc. That can be unsafe and can trip. Our range reflects a dedicated, correctly-sized, permitted circuit.
